Week Notes 06

📝March 24 2025- March 30 2025

This week's week notes will be short and sweet. It's been a busy week with a few assignment meetings and one presentation we had to do - but it's alright in the whole grand scheme of things. We're close to approaching the end of the semester and I'm glad most of assignments are handed in at this point.

We celebrated D's birthday by surprising him at the movies, planned out by his girlfriend. We ended up watching the new Minecraft movie and it was pretty funny as we had thought there wouldn't be much people there seeing it was a weekday, but nope. We forgot it was the public school holidays and a lot of tweens were there with their parents. The movie was honestly one of the most cringe-worthy things I've seen, but I got to say, it did entertain me. It didn't hold up to the Minecraft charm I wanted to see from it - and one notable thing that would've improved it is if they included some of C418 signature game soundtrack. And I would've loved to see the movie include some quieter moments as the entire movie felt like it was just running towards the next punchline. The animation is a bit hit-or-miss as well - the sheep and zombies looked atrocious, but I liked the golem and skeletons. Anyway, I would probably not watch it again (though I can see the appeal of rewatching it with a group of friends) as it felt like its target audience was definitely a lot younger than my friends and I.

It was fun either way, and we had some average-tasting Korean food after. It was a nice break from all the assignments and we agreed to not speak about academics at all that evening.

I spent a lot of my weekend just listening to the new Black Country, New Road record: Forever Howlong. I took a pause from listening to them after their frontman, Isaac, had left the band after the release of their second album, but I've been watching this new album's release and the singles caught my attention. They've decided to have their 3 female band members alternate in this record, and honestly, it works really great. There were some comments on Reddit that made the comparison to Fiona Apple and Joanna Newsom, and I can see that in the lyrics and hear it inn the instrumentation. The instrumentation is a little on the muddier side (compared to the prior album's mixing where it felt right up your ears) and it feels like it is slightly more focused on the vocals this time around. However, the instrumentation is still excellent - I love the saxaphones in this one. I'll have to soak more of the music but honestly I think it might be my favourite from them, for now! I loved it so much I got it on Bandcamp haha.

The next week will be a little busy as well with another presentation prep scheduled and our data analysis second paper, but hopefully it'll all work out smoothly. There's also the semesterly colloquium that we were tasked to run a short workshop by one of our elective's lecturer in exchange for some extra credit.

Hopefully I'll be able to read through some blog posts after not going through my RSS reader properly for 2 or more weeks, I miss the Bear community! I'm hoping to return to writing more frequently by mid-to-end April. I have some ideas, but just need more time.
